The “Final” Font Directory!

Believe it or not but fonts rule your world. Do you run a website? Are you a student who creates projects/presentations (I hate ‘em) every now and then? Does your boss sits on your head for a good powerpoint presentation which pleases his clients? Or whatever on earth you are upto, fonts are a part of everything. The correct font selection can work wonders for you and the wrong one can easily get the s*** (beep beep) out of you!

Here goes a list of resources where you can find the best of the fonts (which do not come bundled with your MS Word) and hey mostly they all are FREE!

The list currently includes 48 websites which have good collection of fonts. And for those who would not like to surf through all the listed websites, I have mentioned the websites in descending order with the best at the top but do consider the last two (Ubuntu font and Latin font) in the list.

Please remember my selection criteria had some restrictions (very minor ones) like:

  • Website with too many ads was excluded.
  • Website not in English was included if it had real good fonts.
  • Ofcourse good fonts were the criteria else the list would have been huge.

How to install a font

Unzip the files you have downloaded, then :

  • Windows Vista : Right-click on the font files (.ttf, .otf, .fon) then click Install
  • Windows XP : Put the font files (.ttf, .otf, .fon) into “C:\Windows\Fonts” or in the font folder in control panel.
  • Mac OS X : Put the font files (.ttf, .otf) into /Library/Fonts
  • Time to roll up the sleeves. Here goes the (still expanding) list:

    • DaFont: The ultimate font collection. And it is being updated daily.
    • UrbanFonts: With over 8,000 freeware fonts they got great collection of dingbats too.
    • FontGarden: Great free collection of fonts with some special ones available for small fee.
    • Fontica: 6927 free fonts 350 eXchange fonts. You can even submit your fonts and do give a visit to there top fonts collection.
    • FontParade: They do not have some very huge collection but I included them as they got real distinguished fonts.
    • 1001Fonts: The famous collection with auto updated 10 most popular fonts.
    • CreamUnDo: The real big collection. And you will always find some users online with the website. Its mentioned on there websites top right corner.
    • NeatFonts: And they do mean neat, clean and small but good collection of free fonts.
    • BetterFonts: So the names keep changing and the collections don’t? No way! This one is huge and with some good fonts too.
    • WebPagePublicity: Once again the list is huge and the good part is they got no disturbing ads around. No paid paid fonts too. Its all free!
    • SimplyTheBest: Most fonts are freeware and as such free to use for webmasters and hobbyists. If you wish to use them commercially, you may have to register them first.

    • Glashaus-Design: Very few but very rare font collection available here. A must see.
    • SmashingMagazine: A good font collection by them with regular updates too. There fonts category keeps getting updated with important news about fonts available everytime.
    • Smeltery: Font which you wont find anywhere else. And they are all worth downloading too.
    • FontFox: I wont count the numbers available as it is huge and they have placed the ads well too. They wont disturb you. Do visit and download.
    • Harold’sFonts: Currently the total is 105 and this guy never seems to include just any other font in its list. The collection has 105 unique ones there.
    • IAI-JP: I do not know what that name means as the site is in Chinese but they have some good fonts so they are in the list here and that too among the top few toppers.
    • HomeFont: The true home of fonts. They show you good preview of the fonts with the default text with download for windows as well as for mac available.
    • FontReactor: Distinguished collection of fonts and the ads in the website have also been well blended.
    • exljbris: The header image will itself tell you that the website has good innovative font collection.
    • EnigmaFonts: A huge archive of fonts. I don’t know how these guys are able to work this hard.
    • DesignerInAction: The website is in German language but why to care about that. They have good font collection and you must see that.
    • SearchFreeFonts: The collection contains over 13,000 free fonts and over 31,000 commercial fonts. That’s a whole lot of font lovin’! Look to the font of the week to get started, or just jump right into browsing through the categories.
    • RotoDesign: Small little unique font collection. I just do not understand why they link to chank co. for some fonts. They should not direct user somewhere else. Giving credits to original owner is fine.
    • SpeakEasy: One page, unique fonts, no ads to disturb. Keep scrolling down and you will find great fonts!

    • Astigmatic: The typefaces on this page have been designed for you to use and enjoy free of charge. Use them in your Personal and Commercial projects and designs. They only ask that you do not redistribute the fonts themselves or create derivative products, whether other fonts, stickers, stencils, or other alphabet products (for free or profit) to others without there permission.
    • K-Type: Once again. Small but cool font collection free till you use it for personal works. Else buy the license.

    • PizzaDude: Seems like pizza sales are down and they must be enjoying the new business as there collection is worth a try.

    • FontShack: Lots of ads around but if you see that ABCDEFG (the links to visit fonts in alphabetical order)… somewhere than start surfing.
    • Die-Gestaltin: A small collection of OK OK fonts. What to say, already there are so many good ones in the list above that I cannot say good words for everyone. Still they deserved to be in the list.
    • MoorStation: Orderless with no real description around but it is a huge collection. Really huge.
    • Apostrophiclab: Do you know what that name means? They got some 189 categories of fonts. And there is so much inside each category.
    • Vitaly Friedman’s Notebook: A good collection of 15 best License-free pixel fonts.
    • FontShop: See if you get anything good there. I didn’t give it a try ever! But it looked that they might have something so included them.

This wasn’t the end of the list. If you think I missed something than leave a comment here indicating the source and I will instantly link back to you and the source you indicate. (the source could be your blog article too)

But please remember the website should provide good fonts, the presentation should be good and too many ads should not be there to disturb user experiences.
