Recover Your Word Document (the .doc file)

Accidentally deleted your word document? Improper shutdown happened? Now lets see what can we do to recover your deleted word file. I am assuming that you have checked your recycle bin and searched for the file using the search feature in start menu (remember to search the hidden files too).

  • Using the search feature in start menu do the searching for *.asd files. See if you find anything related (*.asd is the file type created by Microsoft for automatic word backup).
  • If no positive results are found than perform the same search for *.wbk files. Check files one by one and see if anything similar is available (*.wbk files is the backup file type used for Microsoft Word).
  • Nothing found yet? Now search for *.tmp files. Try and modify the modification date of files being searched within last week or so as else you might find many .tmp files in search results. (*.tmp are the temporary files)
  • Nothing found yet? Now you are left with the last option. Try a software to recover your files. You might give a try to nfsundelet or undelete plus.

And now I hope you have learned the lesson. Better set MS word to automatically backup your files than to face the same situation again. To automatically backup files go to tools>options and then save tab. Select Always create backup copy.
