Hide The Icon Text In Windows Vista

Microsoft Windows Vista is famous for its looks and beautiful looking icons but as far as I am concerned the icon text below each icon seems to steal the show from your desktop. As you already know what an icon means (like the Internet Explorer icon) so you can comfortably remove the icon text from the icons. The procedure is simple.

Right-click on any shortcut and click Rename. Hold your ALT key and type 255 using the number keypad on the right of your keyboard. Your number keys above the alphabetic keys won’t work and remember to turn Num Lock on before you type 255 (now you know why all keyboards do not save space by removing those keys.)

ALT+255 means a blank space for the shortcut name so you name the first shortcut as ALT+255 and the second shortcut as “ALT+255ALT+255″ (two blank spaces) and repeat the process thrice for the third shortcut. The process goes on for the consecutive icons…

Remember that you won’t be able to rename back the folders once you name them using this method. To rename them back to some visible name you need to use DOS prompt. Use the command given below:

ren “Alt+255” “NewName”
