Tweak The Prefetcher Service of Windows XP To Increase Application Load Time

Windows Prefetcher Service is responsible to prefetch application data which is responsible to start various applications. If we assign extra control to this service then we will observe that applications will load faster than normal as they will be given extra resources to prefetch application data.

You will have to browse to the key mentioned below in order to change the value of Windows Prefetcher Service.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Session Manager \ Memory Management \ PrefetchParameters

Now, in the right pane you will find the name “EnablePrefetcher” and some data which it is assigned to it. By default this data is 3 and you can increase it to 5 which will give the prefetcher more system resources and hence increase application load time.

Although, this value can be increased to 9 but that might result in overuse of resources of your system and hence it isn’t recommended. But I don’t mean you cannot play with your system ;)

You will have to restart your computer for this setting to take effect.

It is recommended that you regularly delete the prefetcher cache as it is just responsbile to eat up your system space and no other reason. You can find the prefetcher cache here:

C:\Windows\Prefetch
