Was Download Day Of Firefox 3 A Hoax?

Well, don’t get me wrong. I have been using Firefox for last 2 years and usually every odd hour you will find around three tabs opened in my Firefox window.

Firefox 3 was to be launched on June 17th and their were plans to hit the Guinness Book of World Records for most software downloads in a day. Almost every blog posted about this and at the end of the day the number turned out to be 8,002,530 downloads in 24 hrs. They finally made it to the Guinness Book of World Records.

I was also one of those of who wrote about this in my blog and I registered for the pledge that I will download Firefox 3 with 2 different emails. Now the weird part is that I didn’t download Firefox 3 on June 17th! Still I received email (in both my mail boxes) where they thanked me for the download and gave me the PDF file using which I downloaded my certificate that I was part of the download?!?!

If I didn’t download the software then why was I counted twice for the World Record?

I love Firefox and will keep using it even if you people kick me hard for this silly post. :)

How About Being Part Of A World Record?

Download Day 2008This is simple! Firefox 3 is all set to be launched on June 17, 2008. All what the firefox community is requesting you is to download firefox 3 on the day of launch and help firefox be counted among the most downloaded applications in one single day.

It is that simple and it will leave a mark on the history of Internet which people will always remember. And the best thing, you will be part of it too.

Are you ready to create history?

Netscape Passes The Torch To Mozilla

The king of web browsers back in 1990’s, Netscape Navigator, finally passed the torch to Mozilla Firefox on February 1st, 2008. In a posting to Netscape’s blog, Tom Drapeau writes:

While internal groups within AOL have invested a great deal of time and energy in attempting to revive Netscape Navigator, these efforts have not been successful in gaining market share from Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. Recently, support for the Netscape browser has been limited to a handful of engineers tasked with creating a skinned version of Firefox with a few extensions.

AOL’s focus on transitioning to an ad-supported web business leaves little room for the size of investment needed to get the Netscape browser to a point many of its fans expect it to be. Given AOL’s current business focus and the success the Mozilla Foundation has had in developing critically-acclaimed products, we feel it’s the right time to end development of Netscape branded browsers, hand the reins fully to Mozilla and encourage Netscape users to adopt Firefox.

Do have a look at CNET’s original coverage of the mouth watering deal of AOL acquiring Netscape for 4.2 billion in 1998.

Few important queries which you might have in your brains are answered on the Netscape blog. They are listed below:

Q: What will this mean?
A: We’ll continue to release security patches for the current version of the browser, Netscape Navigator until February 1, 2008. After February 1, there will be no more active product support for Navigator 9, or any previous Netscape Navigator browser. This includes Netscape v1-v4.x, Netscape v6, Netscape v7 Suite, Netscape Browser v8, and Netscape Navigator/Messenger 9.

Q: I use Netscape now. Now that Netscape is stopping support, what do I do?
A: The Netscape Team fully stands behind the fine work being done by the Mozilla Foundation. We recommend that you download Mozilla Firefox and give it a try. We know you’ll enjoy it!

Q: Will I still be able to use Netscape?
A: You will still be able to download old versions of Netscape from the Netscape Archive (link coming). However, these products are no longer supported. Our recommendation for the nostalgic out there is to download Mozilla Firefox, and add on the Netscape theme and Netscape extensions which are available here:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/user/56836

This way you’ll have a current web browser that is very secure, and has the look and feel you have grown accustomed to with Netscape.

Q: Will anyone be around to answer my questions?
A: The following sites will continue to exist and offer information about Netscape after February 1, 2008: The UFAQ (http://www.ufaq.org/), the Netscape Archive, the Netscape Community Forum

Please bear in mind that no active product support will be available.

Q: Does this mean that Netscape is dead?
A: While we will no longer support the Netscape web browser as of February 1, 2008, Netscape.com (http://www.netscape.com) will still continue to serve as a general use Internet portal.

Speculations Rising For Release Of FireFox 3.0 & Internet Explorer 8

While Microsoft has muted all details associated with Internet Explorer 8.0 and will deliver a preview of the future of its browser at the end of April and the beginning of May 2007, Mozilla is getting ready to release the first public beta of Firefox 3.0. Microsoft is at the present time only dogfooding Internet Explorer 8.0, and that is a pre-alpha version. Meanwhile, Mozilla has already reached alpha 2 level with Firefox 3.0, codenamed Gran Paradiso.

At the 2007 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, a Microsoft representative forecasted that it could take as much as two years before the final version of IE8 will be released to users.

Mozilla however is not waiting around for Microsoft. In this context, Firefox 3.0 is scheduled for its first public beta this spring. Additionally, Brendan Eich, chief technical officer for Mozilla, announced that the final version of Firefox 3.0 is planned for late Autumn, 2007.

So where do you find yourself? Have you started using IE7 and FireFox 2.0? Not yet? Friends the world is running fast, very fast. Start using the latest instead of the legacy softwares. You will surely love the new ones. Get set go . . .
