Before we move ahead I will request you to backup your database for worst case scenarios. Go to Tools > Export Menu and click on Download Export File. Save it to a secret location all locked up away from the eyes of goons!

Now, it is time to upgrade WordPress manually:

STEP 1

Download latest version of WordPress from the WordPress home page. Unzip the downloaded file and from the unzipped files delete wp-config.php file & wp-config folder. As you can see below (click to enlarge), I have deleted wp-config.php file & wp-config folder.

STEP 2

Using your FTP client or shell client (depends on how you access your WordPress installation files online) go to your website’s home directory where all the WordPress files/folders are located.

STEP 3

Now, you have to delete every file and folder from this location (as per STEP 2) other than wp-config.php, wp-config folder. and .htaccess file.

NOTE: It will be better to compare the files/folder in your website’s home directory and from your the download that you got in STEP 1. I am requesting you to perform this step so that you don’t end up deleting anything extra from your website’s home directory. Compare the two and delete those files/folders that are part of WordPress installation.

STEP 4:

Upload all files/folders obtained after STEP 1 to your website’s home directory so that updated version of all files that you deleted once again is placed in the path from which you deleted those.

STEP 5:

Once done with step 4 then you will have to load your WordPress Dashboard once again and you will see a message (see screenshot below) requesting you to update your database. Click on “Update WordPress Database” button.

STEP 6:

Check the URL http://<your-domain>/wp-admin/update-core.php. If your WordPress installation directory is something else please do remember to mention that in the URL so that you reach the correct path for the file update-core.php.
