Control uTorrent Downloads From Your Mobile

P2P and uTorrent are living just because there are plenty of nerds out there who love this concept. Another result of one of the uTorrent fans is a mobile interface uTorrent mUI using which you can easily control your uTorrent client using your mobile browser. See his forum post for detailed discussion.

The uTorrent mUI has not been developed by BitTorrent Inc. and is not an official interface (i.e. be ready for few bugs in the coming time).

Check out these tutorials to know the best of uTorrent performance optimization tricks:

I am sure that you would appreciate the CompuWorld tutorial and ofcourse the awesome LifeHacker’s tutorial.

uTorrent 1.7 Finally Released In Stable Form

First official stable release of uTorrent client after it got sold to BitTorrent is here. uTorrent 1.7 is out after spending several months under constant development and bug tracking. uTorrent fans need not worry about there favorite client as the new version is just an update of the older one with some enhanced features. Plus this one is fully vista compatible.

Do have a look at our famous article “Optimizing uTorrent’s Settings For Enhanced Performance.

Few of the new features in uTorrent 1.7 are:

  • Full Vista support!
  • Local peer discovery: Find local peers on your own network
  • Option to update to beta versions of uTorrent
  • Fixes and numerous enhancements
  • And a lot more…

Something very new to this version is that you are not required to make separate downloads for installer and standalone application. With one (very small) .exe file you can either use it as standalone application or install it into your windows system. Cool hmm!

How To Download Free Torrent Files Using Google

Google is a search engine that allows you to find anything on the Internet, no matter the format, the type or the content. That’s why you’re also able to find free torrents and download them straight from Google without having to find alternative sources. The torrent is quite a useful way to download anything because it doesn’t need a stand-alone server as the files are transferred between users. Basically, the files are stored on a user’s computer and then sent to another system using a simple .torrent file. This protocol is extremely useful and fast as it is able to download a huge file on multiple segments from several users in the same time.

At this time, there are a lot of companies that are trying to release their products in the torrent format because they don’t have a stable server or they want to allow users to download the product with full speed. The best example is represented by the Opera browser that can be downloaded into multiple formats including the .torrents extension.

Now, the Google search engine has several operators that allow users to search for a certain type of information or extension. “Filetype” was especially designed to help you find a specified extension, including .torrent. So, if you want to download anything from Google through the torrent protocol, you should type the following command in the search box:

CODE:
filetype:torrent anything

The term anything must be replaced with the name of the file you’re looking for. Google will search the Internet for information and, if it available, it returns the torrent file that must be opened with your client to start the download. So, if you want to search for the Opera browser, you should type the following command:

CODE:
filetype:torrent opera browser

Top 20 Torrent Sites As Of April 2007

As of April 23, 2007, the most popular Bit Torrent search engine sites are listed below. This list is selected from hundreds of reader email suggestions, Votes and Surveys. But this list should not be considered up to the mark by any means.

Warning for new users: while P2P file sharing technology is completely legal, many of the files traded through P2P are copyrighted. Unless you live in Canada where users are shielded from P2P lawsuits, then downloading P2P files may put you at risk for a civil lawsuit in any other country. These lawsuits are usually class-action suits, filed against groups of users who blatantly copy and distribute copyrighted materials. Recently, the MPAA, the RIAA, and the governments of England and Australia took several thousand users to court, demanding that they pay thousands of dollars in copyright infringement penalties.

Your Internet Service Provider may, at their discretion, release their logs of your downloading activity to potential copyright plaintiffs. The more megabytes you download, the more you risk being sued by copyright protection groups. Please know this risk before you use any of the following Torrent search engines below.

  1. Demonoid (Demonoid is also a major tracker database that supports thousands of swarms around the globe. Even better, the Demonoid community polices itself by monitoring how much each member actually shares files. (”Leeches” are not tolerated at Demonoid). Note: because new memberships at Demonoid are scarce, you will need to be patient and committed if you wish to join.)
  2. Torrentportal.com
  3. Snarf It! (born from previous Suprnova influences)
  4. The Pirate Bay (Pirate Bay, by readership size, is the most popular torrent search site today. Pirate Bay has an immense database of 360,000 torrents, the third largest database after Isohunt and Torrentspy.)
(May 31, 2006: The Pirate Bay has been shut down by Swedish authorities. Details are available on the Pirate Bay home page.)
(June 2006: The Pirate Bay has restarted operations, now that the police have duplicated the PB hard drives for forensic purposes. Enjoy this database while it is still around, folks!)
  5. Scrapetorrent.com is another torrent meta-search engine that is gaining popularity.
  6. TorrentTyphoon.com (a unique bittorrent meta-search engine that searches several of the most popular sites. Unfortunately, it does not do a good job categorizing the torrent files themselves)
  7. Torrentbox.com FYI: like Isohunt, Torrentbox is being sued by the MPAA as of February 28, 2006. The days for this fine search engine may be numbered.
  8. Torrentspy.com offers over 420,000 torrents in its database, the largest torrent index that is readily available to the public. Enjoy it while you can.
  9. Torrentscan.com (a “meta-search” engine, which is a search engine that searches other search engines)
  10. Torrentreactor.to (Torrentreactor has made a comeback from a hijacking and an uncooperative hosting service. They have moved to a different server setup and a Tonga country domain outside the USA. Read the details on their home page.)
  11. Mininova.org has 150,000 torrents indexed as of December, 2006. Mininova is the successor to Suprnova, one of the original big torrent databases of the Web.
  12. Isohunt.com
January 22, 2007: Although Isohunt was suddenly shut down by its original ISP before the weekend, the administrators have relaunched the service on a new ISP with new hardware. There are still problems, but Isohunt does live for the time being. The MPAA lawsuit is slated for a March summary judgment, so make sure you use Isohunt now, while you still can.
January 8, 2007: Isohunt has nearly 400,000 torrents in their database. Also noteworthy: any Isohunt torrent listed as “ISOhunt release” means that it is a file verified by the administrators…a nice feature to help you locate authentic torrents and not fake files. On a sad note: Isohunt is being sued by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) for copyright infringement. If you want to use this tremendous Canadian site, you better use it while you can.
  13. Torrentmatrix.com
  14. ByTorrents Meta Search
  15. BTjunkie
  16. Torrentz.com
  17. Torrents.to
  18. LegalTorrents.com (As the name implies, this is a database of public-domain content)
  19. Thinktorrent.com
  20. FileList.org

Special Mention:
ShareTV.org (ShareTV is dedicated to sharing television episodes and entire TV series. Find “24″, “Heroes”, and “Lost” episodes here.)

Torrent-Finder.com (It “meta-searches” 159 torrent sites as of this writing.)

HOW TO optimize uTorrent settings for improved performance

Though torrents cross the law line many times, torrents enjoy a decent treatment and respect from the Linux community (not only, some Windows software developers use torrents for software distribution) who uses this file sharing method to offer free Linux distributions all over the world, smoothing the propagation of this alternative operating system. Here we introduce you to some facts which can be usefull for you to optimize your uTorrent client.

Once you have downloaded the client you go straight to the options menu.

General Settings:
What is Seeding?
Websites you use to download torrents expect you to upload some amount of data in a set ratio. A fair practice so that we give out something along with whatever we download. This process is called seeding. Less seeded downloads slowly die out from the respective servers.

Under the general tab, make sure you have checked the following options: “Close to tray” , “Minimize to tray” and “Always show the tray icon”. Why? Because it is better to keep the torrent client always open in order to seed and gain a higher ratio

Downloads:
Use a folder for completed downloads and a sub folder inside this folder for temporary data. Creating folder for temporary data somewhere else on the hard disk slows down your system when the temporary data is to be transfered to original folder after download completes.

Connection Settings:
Use random port everytime for incoming connections so that even if someone trackes your port once, he/she will not get the same result the next time. Just my common sense.

Queuing Settings:
By default 8 torrents can be downloaded at the same time. Now depending on your internet connection speed you can change the numbers. Remember that a slow internet connection and a larger queue will result in slower donwload.

Use the Hot Key (Boss Key):
Under “Others>BossKey” you can set up your own keyboard key to hide the window if someone suddenly interrupts.

We agree that torrents are highly criticized by those who create commercial games, softwares, ebooks etc. as the pirated versions of these are (almost) always available on most of the torrent websites. CompuWorld wants to clear the fact that by this post we do not support piracy but we want to introduce our readers to a platform over the Internet which has a collection of some very useful resources.
